The Two Churches

We reproduce here by kind permission of the author, Elizabeth Everitt, a web version of her very interesting booklet on the history of the two churches Swaffham-Two-Churches which was published in 1996. Copies of a shortened version covering just St Mary's are available to buy in St Mary's. There is also a more recent booklet on the history of St Cyriac's produced by the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) which is available online (see below) and to buy in St Cyriac's.

Inevitably some things have changed since the publication of Swaffham-Two-Churches in 1996. Most notably:

• In St Mary's there are no longer "lights burning in the chancel and above the aumbry on the north chancel wall remind us of the perpetual presence of God".
• The Tothill chapel in St Mary's is no longer a Lady chapel.
• In St Cyriac's, the north and south transepts have been boxed in to provide space for a small kitchen, lavatories and storage space.
• The Courcelle organ is no longer in St Cyriac's.
